Sea Pines Bike Trails: Rules, Gate Passes and the Best Rides

6 min read

Fall is one of the best times to ride Hilton Head Island. The air is cooler, the trails are quieter and the marsh glows gold in the late afternoon. For many visitors, the ride they look forward to most is the Sea Pines bike trails on the island's south end. Sea Pines has a 17-mile network of leisure trails that connects its beaches, forest and harbor, and it's one of the prettiest rides in the Lowcountry.

Sea Pines is also a gated community with its own rules, and they catch a lot of riders off guard. Not everyone can bike in, there's a gate fee for vehicles, and e-bikes aren't allowed at all. This guide covers what you need to know before you go, plus our favorite rides once you're inside.

Can You Ride Bikes in Sea Pines?

Yes, but it depends on where you're staying. Sea Pines limits use of its leisure trails to property owners and their guests, including vacation renters staying inside the gates. If your rental house or villa is in Sea Pines, you can ride the trails as much as you like.

If you're staying somewhere else on the island, the rules are different. Sea Pines does not allow daily visitors who aren't staying inside the community to enter by bicycle. That means you can't ride up to the gate from Coligny or Forest Beach and pedal in. Day visitors who want to see Sea Pines need to drive in and pay the gate fee.

If you are staying outside Sea Pines, the island still has plenty to ride. The Town of Hilton Head Island maintains about 64 miles of public pathways, and our complete guide to Hilton Head bike trails covers the best public routes.

Sea Pines Gate Fee and Passes in 2026

The Sea Pines gate fee went up on March 1, 2026. The daily visitor pass is now $10 per vehicle, up from $9. Here's how the common passes break down:

  • Daily visitor pass: $10 per two-axle vehicle

  • Weekly visitor pass: $30 per two-axle vehicle

  • Weekly short-term rental pass bought at the gate: $20 (most rental guests get a pass from their rental manager or owner ahead of time)

You can buy a pass at the main gate on Greenwood Drive or at the Ocean Gate off Cordillo Parkway, between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m. Cash and credit cards are accepted, but card payments carry an extra convenience fee. At the main gate, stay in the right-hand lane to buy a pass.

One more tip: if you're staying in Sea Pines and leave during your trip, get a re-entry passcode at the gate on your way out. You'll need it to get back in.

Sea Pines Bike Trail Map: How the Trails Are Laid Out

The Sea Pines bike trail map shows a network of paved leisure trails that runs alongside the main roads and links nearly every part of the community. You can ride from your rental to the beach, the Forest Preserve, Harbour Town and the shops near the front gate without ever needing a car.

The community publishes an official leisure trail map with its rules of the road, and it's part of the welcome materials the community provides for vacation renters. If you plan to visit the Forest Preserve, trail maps are available at its entrance on Greenwood Drive, about a mile from the main gate on the left.

The Best Rides on the Sea Pines Bike Trails

The Sea Pines Forest Preserve

The Forest Preserve covers more than 600 acres and is the largest undeveloped tract of land on Hilton Head Island. Ride the rice dike for open views across the water, then park your bike and walk to the 4,800-year-old Indian Shell Ring, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Bikes aren't allowed on the walking trails, so use the bike parking spots provided. The preserve is open from sunrise to sunset.

Harbour Town and the Lighthouse

A ride to Harbour Town is a Sea Pines classic. The red-and-white striped lighthouse makes a great photo stop, and the marina is a relaxing place to rest your legs before the ride back. Go early in the morning or around sunset for the softest light and lightest crowds.

Sea Pines Beach Access and Riding at Low Tide

Hilton Head has about 12 miles of beach, and at low tide the hard-packed sand is ideal for biking. The Sea Pines leisure trails lead to the community's beach access points, so you can ride right to the sand. Check a tide chart before you go and plan your beach ride for the hours around low tide, when the beach is widest and firmest. Rinse your bike with fresh water afterward to clear away salt and sand.

Sea Pines Bike Rules Every Rider Should Know

Sea Pines has its own leisure trail rules. Keep these in mind:

  • No e-bikes. Electric bikes, including pedal-assist models, are prohibited in Sea Pines, along with motorized scooters and golf carts.

  • Stay on the trail. Riding on the road is prohibited wherever a leisure trail exists.

  • Ride single file on the right side of the trail.

  • Pedestrians have the right of way. Call out "Passing on your left" before you pass.

  • Watch for cars at crossings. Drivers aren't required to stop for riders waiting to cross the road.

  • Wear a helmet, especially children.

  • Lock your bike whenever you leave it.

  • Give wildlife space. Assume any lagoon or pond could have an alligator, and stay at least 60 feet away from any you see.

If you ride after dark anywhere on the island, the Town of Hilton Head Island notes that bikes must have a headlight and a red rear reflector, since most pathways aren't lit.

Choosing the Right Rental Bike for Sea Pines

Because e-bikes aren't allowed in Sea Pines, pick a pedal bike for any ride inside the gates. A comfortable beach cruiser is the go-to choice. Wide tires handle both the paved trails and firm sand at low tide, and the upright seating makes for an easy, relaxed ride.

  • Riders who want extra stability often prefer an adult trike.

  • Families with little ones can add a kiddie cart for toddlers or an Alleycat trailer bike for young riders who aren't ready to pedal the whole way.

  • Couples looking for something fun can try an adult tandem bike.

Staying outside Sea Pines? An electric bike rental is a great way to cover more ground on the island's public pathways, where the Town allows Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes. Just don't take it through the Sea Pines gates.
