Planning a trip to Hilton Head Island? There’s no better way to explore this Lowcountry paradise than on two wheels. With over 60 miles of paved trails and access to hard-packed beaches, Hilton Head is one of the most bike-friendly destinations in the country. Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or just looking for a leisurely ride, renting a bike is the perfect way to take in the island’s beauty.

We have put together some essential bike rental tips so that you can make the most of your Hilton Head biking experience!

1. Choose the Right Bike for Your Ride

Hilton Head offers a variety of trails and terrains, so selecting the right bike is key to a comfortable ride. Pedals Bike Shop provides a wide range of bikes to suit every need:

  • Unisex Cruisers: Perfect for leisurely rides on Hilton Head’s flat, paved paths.

  • 3-Wheel Adult Bikes: Ideal for riders who prefer extra stability and comfort.

  • Tandem Bikes: For couples or friends who want to pedal together, these are a fun and unique way to explore.

  • Electric Bikes: For longer rides or those seeking extra assistance, e-bikes provide a smooth, effortless experience.

  • Child-Friendly Options: Choose from kiddie carts, child seats, or tag-along bikes to include the little ones.

2. Reserve Your Bike in Advance

Hilton Head is a popular destination, and bikes can sell out quickly, especially during peak travel seasons. To secure your preferred ride, visit Pedals’ rentals page and reserve ahead of time. Early reservations ensure you’ll get exactly what you need, whether it’s a trike bike for adults, a tandem bike rental, or something else.

3. Take Advantage of Delivery Services

One of the best perks of renting from Pedals Hilton Head is their convenient delivery and pick-up service. Simply place your order, and we'll bring your bike directly to your vacation rental, hotel, or other location on the island. No need to worry about transporting your bike—just get ready to ride!

4. Plan Your Routes in Advance

Hilton Head’s bike trails connect most major attractions, making it easy to explore the island without needing a car. Before you set out, familiarize yourself with the trail map and decide which areas you’d like to visit. Some must-ride routes include:

  • Beachfront Paths: Bike along hard-packed sand during low tide for stunning ocean views.

  • Sea Pines Forest Preserve: A shaded, serene escape through lush forests and around scenic lagoons.

  • Shelter Cove and Broad Creek: Enjoy views of marshlands and waterfront dining options along this trail.

For more personalized recommendations, Pedals’ knowledgeable staff can suggest the best routes for your interests.

5. Pack Essentials for a Smooth Ride

Hilton Head’s sunny weather makes cycling enjoyable, but preparation is key. Here’s what to bring for a hassle-free ride:

  • Sun Protection: Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat are a must.

  • Hydration: Bring a water bottle to stay refreshed, especially during longer rides.

  • Snacks: Pack light snacks for energy, especially if you’re venturing into areas like the Sea Pines Forest Preserve.

  • Locks and Helmets: Pedals includes these with rentals, ensuring safety and convenience.

6. Stick to Bike-Friendly Areas

Hilton Head’s well-maintained trails make cycling a breeze, but sticking to designated paths ensures safety for you and others. Avoid busy roads and use the island’s dedicated bike lanes to navigate easily.

If you’re not sure where to start, Pedals’ team can provide a trail map and point you to the safest, most scenic routes.

7. Consider Specialty Bikes for Unique Adventures

For those seeking something different, Pedals offers specialty bikes like trike bikes for adults and adult tandem bikes. These options are perfect for riders looking for added stability or a fun way to explore with a partner. Don’t forget, Pedals also has some of the most affordable bike rentals Hilton Head has to offer without compromising on quality.

8. Inspect Your Rental Before You Ride

Before heading out, take a moment to check your bike:

  • Brakes: Ensure they’re responsive and secure.

  • Tires: Make sure they’re properly inflated.

  • Seat Height: Adjust for a comfortable fit.

Pedals’ staff will assist with any adjustments to ensure your bike is in top condition.

9. Know the Local Rules and Etiquette

Hilton Head is a bike-friendly community, but it’s important to follow local cycling rules:

  • Yield to Pedestrians: Many trails are shared with walkers and joggers.

  • Signal Turns: Use hand signals to communicate with others on the trail.

  • Ride Single File: In busier areas, keep to the right and avoid blocking the path.

10. Maximize Your Experience With Pedals Bike Shop

  • Unparalleled Customer Service: Family-owned and operated, Pedals is dedicated to making your cycling experience seamless and enjoyable.

  • High-Quality Bikes: Every rental is well-maintained to ensure a smooth ride.

  • Convenience: With two locations and delivery options, Pedals makes renting hassle-free.
